It's Really That Simple

I was reading in my quiet time today from John 6 and the aftermath of Jesus miracle of multiplying the loaves and fish.  I came across this exchange which reminded me of how simple the Gospel really is:

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
(John 6:26-29 ESV)
The people who had gathered around Jesus because of the miraculous provision wanted to know what to do to do God's work--o work for eternal life and the provision of God that will never perish.  Here they were in the presence of the Messiah and falling into the same old trap that all religion springs on us.  "What do I need to DO".  And what a wonderful answer Jesus gave--nothing to DO only BELIEVE.  "Believe on the one God sent--believe on ME--this is God's work.  This is the work that will bring you eternal life and God's provision which will never perish."

As I read these verses, an old old truth that I have been living in for 50 years this summer was reinforced.  It really is that simple.  Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.  Sometimes the most simple truths are the hardest to get our heads and hearts around.  But yes, it really is that simple.
